Welcome To Mercy in Action
Feeding the Hungry Today, Equipping Them for Tomorrow
Since 1995, the UK charity Mercy in Action (MiA) has been transforming the lives of some of the world’s poorest of poor; in particular, our projects in the Philippines providing vital housing, medicine, food and schooling.
It was following a visit to the Philippines that MiA founders John and Allison Todd were moved to act when they befriended and fed a group of ‘street boys’. These boys were poor beyond belief; malnourished, living in squalor and with no prospect of education or a safe future. Sadly, this situation was not unique but it provided the catalyst for change that now sees MiA helping hundreds of children and families in some of the world’s poorest and toughest areas.
In addition to supporting its field-based Project Teams, MiA understands the crucial importance of working closely with locally based agencies and professionals and is constantly expanding these valuable partnerships.

March 2008: Latest News from Emily & Tim
Our visit to the Rugby boys.
We are a starting an anti-drug program for the Rugby boys. Rugby boys are so-called as this is the brand of glue they buy. We looked for them at their local hangouts but they were not around. We got to a group of shacks at the back of the market where Tim and I had seen them before. We couldn't see them but I felt we should get out and look. As we walked inside the entrance way to the group of shacks and small shops I saw one boy we work with, JunJun, sitting outside inhaling glue from a plastic bag. He looked up and gave me a big smile, and pointed at a kite he was trying to make in between breaths from the glue. As I looked around a bit I saw around 15 boys from the age of about 10 - 20 (it’s hard to tell coz the drugs make them look so haggard). They were all either buying glue, sniffing glue or passed out. Someone told me there were even more boys under the floor boards sleeping and getting high. So we realized we had walked into a drug den ... ooops we must have taken a wrong turn. I know kids do drugs, but not this many!? Not kids that are this young, not 24/7, not right in front of us! Its something we talk about, we know it in our heads that these kids use drugs but we don't see it ... we all had a big wake up call today!!! I tried to give the drug dealers the dirtiest look I could!!! A local social worker was with us. When we asked her about raiding the drug den she said there was no point. They have arrested most of the kids many times already and they now feel the kids are too deep into drugs to change. She said social services have given up on them and think the kids are beyond help, that’s why they called us in ... to do a job that they felt was a waste of time and an inconvenience! The kids were giving us big beaming smiles and saying that they will be along at the Tabonoc children’s programme tomorrow ... if they wake up! We got back into the car in total shock. Did we just see that? I know now, more than ever, that we need to continue to reach these children. They have been forgotten by everyone else, but not by us. They have been given up on by everyone else, but not by us. We want these kids to be saved, day by day we will continue to be there for them and love them. We will fight for them. They are someone … they are important … they deserve to be remembered.
