Kids Camp!

Every year at the end of the summer vacation (which is April & May in the Philippines) is Mercy in Action’s ‘Kids Camp’. We put this on for children in the community that have joined in clubs that MiA has put on throughout the summer. The camp is at Genesis Valley mountain camp, about an hour or so into the hills away from Talisay City. For almost all of these children this is the only chance they will have all year round to get out the city and have a holiday.

Food, of course, was a big part of the camp!

Smiley faces all round

This year we decided to split the camp into two groups: the first night was Kids Camp ages 8 to 12, and the second and third nights was the Youth Camp for ages 13-17.  Over the 3 nights camping we had 130 children.  Throughout the time on camp the kids were divided into three teams – Blue, Yellow and Green.  The teams were named after their favourite super heroes: Captain America, Batman and Green Lantern.

Each day was filled with loads of different activities to keep the kids engaged and involved.  Loads of art projects were completed – both in groups and individually. Sports, games and relay races kept the children from getting too restless. A team of volunteer helpers drawn from MiA’s college students and youth group helped look after the kids, as well as putting on a drama performance for everyone’s enjoyment!

It was a great chance for the kids to bond with friends they had made over their summer of clubs.  One night there was a bonfire, and there was a chance for everyone to share and to spend good time with each other.

The camp involved lots of singing, dancing and drama!

The final morning was the ‘amazing race’, where each team had to make their way around the whole of the site solving puzzles or completing tasks that would give them a clue.  Solving the clue would tell them where they had to go next.  The blue team went on to win the amazing race, but it was the yellow team that won overall.  The green team didn’t go home empty handed as they were awarded the MVP’s of the camp. In the end, we were all winners!
